Heute: Neues Film-Programm Nr. 1629 (1959)

Today: Neues Film-Programm Nr. 1629 (1959)

This issue of the film program series features one of the Sherlock Holmes classics: The Hound of the Baskervilles. As the common Sherlock Holmes fan might know is the German title Der Hunde von Baskerville misleading because it translates as The Hound from Baskerville (so Baskerville is seen as a place rather than the family name). Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are personified by the absolute great Peter Cushing and André Morell.

On the front cover you can see a a classical Holmes with an Inverness-Cape but not a Deerstalker. In his hand is a small revolver und the „calm“ Dr. Watson can be seen in the background. The title Der Hund von Baskerville consists of two different fonts: one is rather bold and blocky and the other one curly. The centre of the front cover is a terrifying head of the hound!

On the backside of the program you can see a lot of scene from the film, which were cut together and were overlayed. The snippets show the variety of the film with the stereotypical Holmes with a deerstalker, lens and the revolver. Furthermore, the absolute great Christopher Lee can be seen as Henry Baskerville.

As always, you can read a whole summary of the film on the inside of the program. In comparison to the last summary from Sherlock Holmes in geheimer Mission, this summary is pretty accurate even though there are spoilers in the last paragraphs. Generally you can read about the legend, the last viction Sir Charles, the meeting of the client and different spoilers….

The last sentence is quite odd…

Especially the last sentence is quite odd and does not fit for the film: „The legend of Baskerville reveals itself as a cruel man-made fraud.“

All in all, I really think this program is very nice and conveys the atmophere of the film well. As always the haptic feeling of the paper is just unique and the layout with different layers (e.g. the head of the hound as the first layer) is great. Further programs about Der Hund von Baskerville will definitely follow!
