Heute: Tales of Terror (First Day Cover)

Somit bündelt dieses First Day Cover einige meiner Lieblingsfiguren.

Barrymore?

Today: Tales of Terror (First Day Cover)

As a fan of victorian tales and mysteries, there are a lot of classic “monsters” like Dracula, Frankenstein or the remarkable personality of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The First Day Cover of Tales of Terror has all these monsters on a single cover! Additionally, if it also has something to do with Sherlock Holmes: I’m on board!

The First Day Cover is the Hound of the Baskervilles Edition which you can see on the left side. The big coin (in relation to the cover itself) shows one of the most iconic illustration by Sidney Paget: The Hound. If you look closer on the right side, you can see a Sherlock Holmes stamp from the Sherlock Holmes Museum dated with 13th May 1997.

The glowing red colour of the headline Tales of Terror and the dark background show the dark atmosphere of the horror theme. In the background you can see the manor of the Baskervilles with bright yellow lights and two green eyes. A silhouette is looking at the moor. Barrymore?

The coin is the centre of the cover and therefore the highlight of this piece. With the inscription 100th Anniversary of the Return of Sherlock Holmes in 1994, it does not match entirely to the stamp which is dated 1997. Furthermore the place of Gibraltar is more exotic. The classic illustration on the coin is of course from the original story and can be considered iconic.

All in all, I really love this First Day cover which does not only show references to Sherlock Holmes but also to other classic victorian characters.
