A Study in Scarlet (Eine Studie in Scharlachrot) ist der Roman, mit dem die große Reise mit Sherlock Holmes begann und immer noch weiterläuft. Ausgangspunkt und Erscheinung war, wie hinreichend bekannt, in Beeton’s Christmas Annual 1887. Es ist bekannt, dass es 33 Originalstücke davon gibt. In den letzten Monaten ist dann ein ‚neues‘ Exemplar erschienen, welches dann der 34. sein würde.
Eckdaten rund um die Ausgabe
Wie bereits eingehend erwähnt ist A Study in Scarlet das Startabenteuer mit dem alles begann. Aber die Erscheinung im Beeton’s Christmas Annual 1887 war für Conan Doyle nicht der Bringer und wurde im Verhältnis zum heutigen Wert verramscht. Nun gilt genau dieses Exemplar von 1887, laut „Antique Trader Vintage Magazines Price Guide“, als das teuerste Magazin der Welt. Ok, alles klar.
Laut Randall Stock, natürlich Mitglied bei den BSI (Baker Street Irregulars), gibt es auf der Welt 33 Kopien von Beeton’s Christmas Annual 1887, die man genau zuordnen kann. Jedoch hat iHear of Sherlock im Oktober eine News veröffentlicht, dass ein weiteres Exemplar gesichtet wurde: bei abebooks.

Somit würden aus den 33 bekannten Exemplaren nun ein weiteres dazukommen. Angeboten wird es bei abebooks für $75,000 und wird wie folgt beschrieben:

First Edition; with the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes. Bound without wrappers or advertisements in contemporary paper-covered boards (very lightly rubbed) with a cloth spine titled ‘A Study in Scarlet.’ The text is unusually fresh. In a custom quarter-morocco slipcase. With four illustrations by D.H. Friston, two of which feature the earliest depiction of Holmes, not yet characterized by the indelible image by Paget the public has held since 1891. Most copies known lack all or part of the wrappers and ads, as the present copy does. We are aware of only two complete copies sold in the last thrity-five years or more. By now, the story of Doyle’s misfortune in publishing this story is well-known; he sold the entire copyright for £25. The Annual sold out quickly, as did the 1888 book edition. The following decades saw hundreds of editions, most of them piracies. While Doyle reaped little benefit from this novel, he didn’t make the same mistake twice. So far as its historical importance goes, it’s all been said before. Suffice it for us to add that in the field of detective fiction (or, perhaps, for popular fiction in general), A Study in Scarlet was the equivalent of the invention of the electric light bulb. Der Zustand wird allgemein als gut beschrieben, bei der das Papier ungewöhnlich frisch ist. Die meisten Exemplare haben keine Werbung drin, die hier auch fehlt. Das Beeton’s Christmas Annual 1887 war schnell ausverkauft und die anschließende Buchedition 1888 ebenfalls. Doyle verkaufte die Rechte für £25.

Meine Sichtung eines Exemplars
Ich selbst habe 2015 im Museum of London zu der Sherlock Holmes Ausstellung ein Original von Beeton’s Christmas Annual 1887 sehen können, der aus einer privaten Sammlung von Constantine Rossakis stammte. Zuvor gehörte dieses Exemplar einem gewissen Vincent Starrett. Ach, signiert ist dieses Exemplar von Starrett auch noch!
